What is this course about

This website is an introductory online resource on how to write undergraduate level research proposals in line with global conventions. It was designed to give learners a basic idea of what research proposals are as a genre of academic (research) writing and guide them in their effort to:

  • learn to recognize the purpose of and logic in sequencing key structural elements within the major sections of a research proposal – Introduction, Literature Review, Methods, and Expected Outcomes
  • plan, structure, and write the main sections of a research proposal following suggested organizational patterns
  • identify authentic English language structures which are appropriate to a variety of communicative purposes in a scientific text (e.g., showing the importance of the topic, clarifying definitions, stating the study's purpose, etc.)
  • format their references in line with the APA style requirements.

While this guide does revisit core research concepts that you would need to know about when writing the different parts of your proposal, it is by no means a resource on how to plan and conduct research. It is about helping you organize and put your ideas in writing effectively to be able to present your future project in a convincing and confident manner.

We hope that although primarily aimed at undergraduate level students, this resource will be of interest to all those wishing to raise their awareness of international academic writing conventions and learn how to present their research in writing.
